
The body of abducted social activist Jefferson Arevalo was found yesterday, a day after he was abducted by armed men who broke into his home. The attackers also raped Jefferson’s wife and left her severely injured before taking him away.
He was found in the Puerto Rico zone of the department of Meta, central Colombia.
Jefferson was an activist in the Patriotic Union (UP) political party, which was formed during the 1984 peace process and subsequently subjected to an extermination campaign that saw around 5,000 party members and supporters murdered. between the 1980s and 2000s.
In 2003, paramilitaries killed his mother for being a member of the party.
More than 340 social leaders have been killed since 2016.
