NEU condemns Colombian senators’ ‘dangerous’ stigmatisation of teachers

The National Education Union has written to the Colombian embassy in Britain over the latest murders of teacher trade unionists in Colombia. Byron Revelo Insuasty and Douglas Cortés Mosquera were killed in separate attacks over the weekend of 21-22 November.

The letter, signed by NEU Joint General Secretaries Mary Bousted and Kevin Courtney, also condemns recent attacks on the FECODE teachers union by senators in President Iván Duque’s political party, the Democratic Centre, calling on Duque to ‘to denounce the dangerous discourse emanating from members of his party and to provide public guarantees over the democratic right to trade union activity.’

The NEU has met with FECODE and other Colombian trade unionists several times on JFC delegations to Colombia and in Britain.
