Missing human rights defender María Caicedo Muñoz found dead

The Colombian human rights defender María Caicedo Muñoz, who was abducted from her home in Argelia, department of Cauca, on Saturday 20 October, has been found dead near to where she lived.

María, 62, was taken by unidentified armed assailants who also threatened and bound her two daughters during the attack.

María belonged to the ASCAMTA peasant farmers association, which is affiliated to the FENSUAGRO agricultural trade union. She was also a member of the National Coordinator of Coca, Poppy and Marijuana Growers (COCCAM) which has seen at least 30 members killed since the peace agreement was signed in November 2016.

In total, around 400 social activists and human rights defenders have been murdered in Colombia since 2016.
