Another FARC member has been murdered, taking the number of former guerrilla combatants who have been killed since the peace agreement was signed in November 2016 to at least 78. Elivar Benavides was shot dead in the zone of El Plateado de Argelia, department of Cauca, as he walked with a group of friends.
FARC official Gustavo Arbeláez said that Elivar ‘was a comrade who was part of the political party in Cauca. He was committed to peace, to the process, and we are worried that for those of us who support peace, it could cost us our lives’.
Cauca has been the most violent region in Colombia since the agreement was signed. In addition to the murdered FARC members, around 400 social activists have been killed since 2016.
