Masked gunmen have murdered an environmental activist in Pueblo Rico, department of Risaralda, during the night of Thursday 1 February.
Yolanda Maturana was at home when the attackers entered and shot her several times, according to the regional Ombudswoman. Yolanda was a prominent defender of natural resources along the border zone of Risaralda and the neighbouring department of Chocó.
The killing follows a series of denouncements by indigenous residents of the zone regarding the recent presence of unknown armed groups.
According to the INDEPAZ organisation, 21 social leaders were killed in January 2018. In addition, six FARC members have been killed so far this year. The violence contineus the escalation of political killings since the peace agreement was signed in November 2016.
