A campaign organiser for Colombian presidential candidate Gustavo Petro was killed in the municipality of Argentina, department of Huila on Saturday 26 May. Gabriel Muñoz Muñoz was scheduled to be an electoral observer during the election which took place the day after the murder.
Reports said that on Friday night Gabriel had attended a preparation meeting for the election. His body was found with gunshot wounds the following morning.
In response to the murder, Gustavo Petro wrote on Twitter that ‘Our answer is the politics of love. The only ones who should fear our government are the corrupt’.
Petro’s Colombia Humana movement will face right-wing candidate Iván Duque of the Democratic Centre in a second round run-off that will determine the future of the peace agreement.
