Carlos Jimmy Prado Gallardo was a national delegate who represented African-Colombian communities in Nariño, southern Colombia. Carlos was murdered on 2 June in Olaya Herrera Satinga where he lived. He was last seen alive the previous night at a community meeting held over growing local concerns about armed groups in the area.
He had previously told authorities about threats against his life in the hope that steps would be taken to provide protection. When that failed to materialise, he continued with his community activism regardless.
According to Colombia’s Ombudsman office, 282 social leaders have been murdered since 2016.
