Another Displaced Leader Assassinated

News from Colombia | on: Wednesday, 8 June 2011

According to Colombian news reports, a leader of displaced communities in the city of Medellin was assassinated yesterday, Tuesday 7th June, whilst travelling on a bus.

Ana Fabricia Córdoba was a community leader in the neighbourhood of Santa Cruz. According to local human rights organisations, she had repeatedly told authorities that she was receiving death threats but nothing had been done to provide her with protection. Ms Cordoba had arrived to Medellin in 2001 after being forced to flee her home in the region of Uraba by paramilitaries, after her husband was murdered. She had worked to highlight human rights abuses, co-founding an NGO, and becoming a member of the women’s peace movement, and led the community’s demand for their stolen land to be returned.

According to reports, yesterday’s murder occurred on the 11 month anniversary of the murder of her son, allegedly carried out by the police. Ms Cordoba is the latest in a long line of leaders of displaced communities killed in recent months.
