The Colombian teacher and trade unionist Manuel Esteban Tejada was assassinated on 10th January 2011 in the department of Córdoba.
A member of ADEMACOR, the Teachers’ Association of Cordoba, he was killed when armed men shot him at his home.
The CUT trade union confederation has condemned the crime, which adds to the high toll of teachers assassinated in Colombia. Out of the 48 trade unionists assassinated in 2010 in Colombia, 25 were teachers.
The CUT has called for the relevant Colombian government ministries and international organisations including the European Parliament, to take the measures necessary to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. Currently 95% of trade union assassinations in Colombia remain in complete impunity.
