FARC Kidnap Local Government Official in Colombia

News from Colombia | on: Saturday, 30 May 2009

Leftwing FARC rebels yesterday kidnapped a local political leader in the town of Garzon in the Colombia's southern region of Huila. The guerrillas, who apparently arrived in the town dressed as soldiers, took away Armando Acuna, a supporter of President Alvaro Uribe, and killed two of his bodyguards and a police officer who attempted to intervene. Two soldiers, who were part of a unit pursuing the guerrilla unit responsible, were also later killed.

A FARC Special Forces unit, known as the 'Teofilo Forero' Column, is believed to be responsible for the kidnapping which is the first of a politician since last year when the guerrillas unilaterally released a large group of politicians that they were holding.
