Unite the Union, the UK's largest trade union, has launched a campaign to get British parliamentarians to send a Christmas message of solidarity to Colombian political prisoner Carmen Mayusa. Ms Mayusa, a leader of the health workers' trade union ANTHOC, has been imprisoned since May 2006 without having been convicted of any crime.
The decision to support Ms Mayusa was taken by members of the public sector workers' division of Unite following a meeting with Colombian trade unionists at the Public Services International conference in Vienna – reported on here: http://www.justiceforcolombia.org/news/article/33/
Following the Vienna conference the Unite delegation met with the Colombian Ambassador in London where they raised their concerns surrounding the ongoing attacks against trade unionists in Colombia – including detention without trial. The Ambassador failed to give a good reason for Mr Mayusa's ongoing detention, hence the new campaign.
Justice for Colombia has been campaigning for Mr Mayusa's freedom for some months now. For details on her case and more information about what you can do please see http://www.justiceforcolombia.org/?link=3_0_2
