The leader of Colombia's AUC paramilitary group, the largest and most powerful of all the rightwing death squads in the country, has told reporters from the Colombian newsweekly Cambio that the organisation helped support the 2002 election of President Alvaro Uribe. Mancuso told the magazine that "Uribe's ideological discourse was similar to ours" and that instructions were given out by AUC commanders to support his election campaign.
Mancuso's allegations come just a month after the BBC reported that one of the country's leading drugs traffickers had also provided support to the Uribe campaign.
