JFC Event in Brussels

Justice for Colombia is tomorrow participating in a debate hosted by various MEPs in the European Parliament in Brussels about the proposed Free Trade Agreement between Colombia and the European Union. Mariela Kohon of Justice for Colombia will be chairing the event at which speakers from the EU, Colombia and the US will discuss the implications of the agreement for human and labour rights.

Speakers will include representatives of the European Commission as well as:

Steve Benedict, of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC)

Simon Dubbins, Head of International Relations for the Unite trade union in the UK

Richard Howitt MEP, Foreign Affairs Spokesperson for the European Parliamentary Labour Party

Dan Kovalik, from the United Steelworkers trade union in the USA

Alain Lipietz MEP, President of the European Parliament's Delegation for Relations with the Andean Countries

Helmuth Markov, President of the European Parliament's International Trade Committee

Tarsicio Mora, leader of the CUT trade union federation in Colombia

Senator Jorge Robledo, a senior member of the political opposition in Colombia

Javier Sanchez, of the National Indigenous Organisation of Colombia (ONIC)

The meeting is at 3.30pm on Wednesday 29th April in room ASP1G3 of the European Parliament building in Brussels. Interpretation will be available in English, Spanish, French and German.

Other hosts of the event, which is being held in advance of the May 5th-8th trade negotiations between Colombian and European officials, include the International Federation for Human Rights, Friends of the Earth and the Transnational Institute.
