MEP Calls for More Action on Colombian Human Rights

Justice For Colombia News | on: Monday, 20 April 2009

In a statement today the Chair of the European Parliament's Human Rights Committee, French MEP Helene Flautre, has called on the EU to "act more boldly and robustly in its defence of human rights in Colombia". In her statement Ms Flautre points out that the situation in Colombia remains critical "for human rights defenders and all those who are openly critical of official policies" and, in comments sure to anger the Colombian regime, says that "the apparent improvement in some security indicators cannot conceal the increase in human rights violations committed directly by agents of the state, such as cases of torture, forced disappearance, arbitrary detention and extrajudicial executions."
