Yet Another Opposition Senator Targeted for Supposed FARC Links in Colombia

News from Colombia | on: Sunday, 5 April 2009

In a new attempt to 'criminalise' members of the political opposition, Colombian officials have asked the Supreme Court to open an investigation into opposition Senator Jaime Dussan for links to the leftwing FARC guerrilla insurgency. Dussan, of the Democratic Pole opposition party, is the fifth senior member of the opposition to be targeted following the opening of legal processes against Senator Gloria Ramirez (Democratic Pole), Senator Piedad Cordoba (Liberal Party), Congressman Wilson Borja (Democratic Pole) and former Conservative Party President and Minister Dr Alvaro Leyva. All those under investigation are high profile critics of Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, who they accuse of tolerating human rights abuses and disregarding democracy.

Senator Dussan, who formerly led the Colombian teachers' trade union FECODE, was immediately backed by his party with a Democratic Pole statement rejecting the accusations and claiming that it was clear that there was a 'dark' campaign being run against the party.

According to state prosecutors, information on a captured FARC laptop computer shows that the Senator has ties to the guerrillas. The laptop, which was obtained during a March 2008 raid on the camp of senior FARC commander Raul Reyes, has also been used as evidence against numerous other critics of the President despite an Interpol investigation showing that the machine had been tampered with whilst it was in the custody of the Colombian intelligence services. It is not clear why it took over a year for the authorities to discover the information about Dussan on the laptop.
