Justice For Colombia News | on: Friday, 3 April 2009

A Justice for Colombia delegation made up of British Members of Parliament and trade union leaders yesterday arrived in Colombia on a fact-finding mission that was joined by several trade unionists from the United States. The group intends to look into the human rights situation in Colombia with a specific emphasis on the difficulties faced by trade unionists.

"By visiting Colombia to meet with trade unionists, human rights activists, indigenous people and other civil society actors, the group will gain a much better understanding of the complex situation on the ground in Colombia," said delegation coordinator Mariela Kohon. "They will also be visiting political prisoners, talking with the families of victims and meeting with the Colombian Government in order to raise human rights concerns with them and hear about what they are doing in response to the situation," she added.

The group, made up of over 20 delegates, will be based in the Colombian capital Bogota but will pay a one-day visit to the rural region of Arauca, one of the most violent parts of Colombia where human rights groups report an average of one assassination every two days.
