‘Polo Democratico’ Opposition Member Assassinated

News from Colombia | on: Saturday, 17 May 2008

An active member of the 'Polo Democratico' opposition political party in Colombia has been shot dead by unknown assassins shortly after publicly denouncing the links between a Colombian Congressman and a well-known drugs trafficker. Andres Felipe Llano, who was also a community leader in the town of Cartago, was shot dead on May 16th outside a supermarket in the town.

According to Mr Llano's family he had been receiving death threats since giving an interview to 'Radio Robledo', a regional radio station, in which he highlighted evidence linking Congressman Luis Carlos Restrepo Orozco (a former mayor of Cartago) to drugs baron Hernando Gomez Bustamante.

The Colombian authorities have not arrested anyone for the killing.

Mr Llano was the nephew of communist leader Oscar William Calvo who was himself assassinated in 1985.
