Members of US Congress Accuse President Uribe

News from Colombia | on: Tuesday, 15 April 2008

In a letter to President Uribe of Colombia, 63 members of the US Congress have said that they believe that his government is indirectly encouraging attacks against trade unionists. The Congress members, including both Republicans and Democrats, specifically raise their concerns over comments by the President's senior adviser Jose Obdulio Gaviria, suggesting that those involved in a March 6th national protest against human rights abuses, were in fact all guerrilla supporters.

The letter was organised by two Democrat Congress members, James P. McGovern and Janice D. Schakowsky, who asked colleagues to sign up too. Their original letter to their Congressional colleagues, along with the full letter to President Uribe, can be seen here: http://www.lawg.org/docs/McGovern_Schakowsky_Threats.pdf
