The latest killing of a social leader in Colombia has occurred in Tumaco, department of Nariño, one of the regions facing an intensification of violence since the peace agreement was signed in November 2016.

Luz Jenny Montaño, a 48-year-old political activist of African-Colombian descent, was shot dead on Sunday 12 November by two people on a motorcycle who subsequently fled. The attack occurred as local community activists demonstrated against political killings in the region.

Tumaco has suffered multiple recent attacks on civil society. On 5 October, police massacred at least nine peasant farmers who were protesting against forced crop eradication. Twelve days later, José Jair Cortés, who had been coordinating the community response to the massacre, was murdered.
