Unidentified gunmen killed rural social leader Jimmy Medina in San José, department of Guaviare, on 3 October. The 32-year-old was vice-president of the Communal Action Board of the village of Capricho and a member of the political organisation Patriotic March. At the time of his death, he had been coordinating improvements on the road connecting Puerto Viejo and Cachicamo.

At around midday, while at work, Jimmy was abducted by armed men. His body was found nearby an hour later with eight bullet wounds and signs of torture. Local organisations said he was 'honest, committed, transparent and recognised by the community'.

Over 100 social leaders and political activists have been murdered in Colombia in 2017.
