Indigenous Embera residents of Medio Baudó in the department of Chocó have appealed to authorities to intervene to retrieve the body of a local community leader and health official who was abducted and murdered by paramilitaries.

Ezquivel Manyoma was taken from his home in the Dabeiba Queracito community on the night of 6 October 2017 before being murdered the following morning. According to reports, Ezquivel's body has remained in the place of his murder since then, with residents afraid to retrieve it due to the continued presence of paramilitaries.

In an appeal for authorities to ensure Ezquivel's body is returned to his family, a local organisation said 'not only did they end the life of a human being, they tore from our territory the wisdom of a leader [and] ancestral knowledge that will not be recovered'.

Over 100 social leaders and political activists have been killed in Colombia in 2017.
