Indigenous leader killed in Valle del Cauca

On Thursday 4th May Jorge Chantre Achipiz, a leader from the Nasa indigenous community in the department of Valle del Cauca, was assassinated.

In a statement released in April this year, Amnesty International denounced the wave of assassinations of indigenous people in Colombia, stating the situation is “alarming” and “raises serious dounts” about the government’s ability to protect communities as the peace process is being implemented.

South-west Colombia, made up of the departments of Nariño, Valle del Cauca and Cauca, is one of the most dangerous partss of the country for human rights defenders and activists. Of the 117 social leaders killed in 2016, 57 were in this region.
