The Colombian riot police (ESMAD) and the army, both known for their heavy handed tactics during protests, caused multiple injuries as coca growers organised protests and blocked roads in response to the government’s unilateral eradication of the crop in the region surrounding the town of Tumaco. The forced eradication contradicted agreements reached concerning the gradual removal of the crop with the simultaneous implementation of alternative economic opportunities.
According to the recently created COCCAM (National Coordination of Coca, Marijuana, and Ampola Farmers), the police shot and pistol-whipped protesters.
