Colombian Military Links CUT Trade Union Federation to Guerrillas

News from Colombia | on: Saturday, 29 March 2008

After arresting an alleged member of the ELN guerrilla group in Colombia, military authorities have shown the man on television with documents "proving" his guerrilla activities. The documents in question are the entirely legal and public conclusions of the 5th Congress of the CUT trade union federation which was held in the Colombian capital Bogota in November 2006. This is, according to a March 27th press release from the CUT, an attempt to link the unions with the guerrillas.

The alleged guerrilla, Benjamin Cardenas Jaramillo, was detained in the town of Soledad in Atlantico department on March 27th. Later the same day he was shown on Colombian news programmes along with "evidence" of his crime the CUT documents and three mobile telephones that soldiers had apparently found on his person. The CUT has rejected this attempt to associate them with the ELN guerrilla group and has asked for a formal apology.

It is not yet clear whether Mr Jaramillo is in fact a guerrilla member or not.
