Union Leader Arrested

A leader of the Colombian agricultural workers' trade union SINDAGRICULTORES has been arrested in the department of Sucre after his home was raided by a large number of soldiers, marines and police officers at 2am on Thursday 27th March. Union officer Manuel de Jesus Reyes, was taken to the nearby city of Sincelejo where he is currently being held without charge in the 'La Vega' prison.

His detention brings to the 20 the number of SINDAGRICULTORES members being held in jail none of them convicted of any crime. In May 2007 the President of the union, Luis Miguel Gomez Porto, was murdered by marines in the town of Ojito in Coloso region.
