Death of Detained Union Leader

News from Colombia | on: Tuesday, 4 March 2008

Justice for Colombia is deeply saddened by the death of Eliberto Poveda, the 60-year-old President of the Sumapaz Agricultural Workers' Union, SINTRAPAZ. Mr Poveda, who was detained by soldiers in October 2007, had recently been released from jail due to illness and died at his home whilst under house arrest. He had never been put on trial and was not convicted of any crime.

Mr Poveda had met with various Justice for Colombia delegations in recent years, including a group made up of British trade unionists and Members of Parliament that traveled to the region of Sumapaz in August 2007. He was detained along with the local candidate of the opposition Democratic Pole party Moises Delgado, and both men were the subject of an Early Day Motion tabled by Labour MP Katy Clark. Over 100 MPs signed the motion calling for them to be released. Mr Delgado remains imprisoned.

Justice for Colombia has sent a letter of condolence to the family of Eliberto.
