Environmental Groups Call on US Congress to Oppose Free Trade Agreement with Colombia

News from Colombia | on: Wednesday, 12 March 2008

Fiends of the Earth and the Sierra Club, two of the largest environmental organisations in the United States, sent US Congressmen a letter last week calling on them to oppose consideration of a Free Trade Agreement between Colombia and the US. Their letter says that, "given the ongoing environmental degradation and egregious human rights abuses in Colombia, including extreme anti-union violence, it is inappropriate to contemplate a trade agreement with Colombia at this time."

In November 2006 the Bush administration agreed a free trade agreement with Colombia but it is yet to be approved by the Democratic-controlled US Congress.
