The Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union has adopted a decision on the disciplinary charges brought against Colombian Senator Iván Cepeda by the Inspector General’s Office. They state they are “deeply concerned about the disciplinary proceedings under way against Senator Cepeda” and consider “that the disciplinary proceedings are misguided”, calling for them to be dropped.

The Committee also states that Iván Cepeda’s case “highlights the need to amend existing legislation with respect to disciplinary proceedings against parliamentarians”, expressing the hope that the powers of the Inspector General to revoke the mandate of an elected official be eliminated.

The full decision can be read here.
