Social leader murdered in Catatumbo

News from Colombia | on: Wednesday, 20 January 2016

On the evening of 16 January Nelly Amaya Pérez was shot dead as she tended her shop in the municipality of San Calixto, in the region of Catatumbo. She was a social leader, the president of the Community Action Committee and a survivor of the genocide of the UP.

AMSCAT, a Colombian agricultural union, condemned the murder and the government's failure to guarantee security for social activists and human rights defenders in the area. Catatumbo, in north-east Colombia, is one of Colombia's most conflictive regions and has been a focal point for rural protest in recent years. In 2013 agricultural workers led a major strike in the area.
