TUC writes to FCO Minister on Miguel Angel Beltran

Justice For Colombia News | on: Friday, 15 January 2016

Following written parliamentary questions to the Foreign Office tabled by Clive Efford MP requesting that the British Embassy send representatives to the public hearing scheduled for January 25th for imprisoned academic Miguel Angel Beltran, the Foreign Office Minister Hugo Swire MP’s response was to state that they cannot ‘interfere in the judicial process’. Sending observers to sit in on trials and hearings is something the embassy has done on several occasions, including Miguel Angel Beltran’s first trial.

In response, the TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady has written to the Minister expressing concern at his reply and asking him to “ensure that the Embassy in Colombia does send a representative to this trial.”

The TUC has always supported the campaign to free Colombia’s imprisoned trade unionists, such as academic Beltran and CUT Executive member Huber Ballesteros, who has now been imprisoned for 28 months without facing trial.
