The International Committee of the Red Cross has announced that forced displacement is likely to effect thousands of more Colombian civilians in 2007 than during the year before.
"Despite the demobilisation of some paramilitaries and the ongoing negotiations, the situation for the civilian population is not improving" said Barbara Hintermann, the head of the Red Cross Colombia delegation. Speaking from Red Cross headquarters in Geneva, Hintermann went on to blame an intensification in military activities for the increase in displacement.
According to the UN High Commission for Refugees there are over 3 million displaced people in Colombia – the second highest figure in the world.
