Argelia, Cauca

On Sunday 18 January troops of the Colombian army’s 3rd Division stationed at a checkpoint near the village of El Plateado shot and killed 25 year-old Faiber Antonio Erazo. Mr Erazo was driving a motorbike towards the army checkpoint when troops opened fire, shooting him in the thorax. Army authorities accused the young man of carrying coca paste, but locals disagreed, and surrounded the checkpoint, taking 88 soldiers prisoner and demanding they leave the area.

Local leader Edil Munoz said that the community were sick of the army, which they accuse of routinely abusing and stigmatising local people.

Mr Erazo was the third civilian killed at an army checkpoint in the area since September. The army’s initial statement denied having shot the young man, claiming that he had died from a crash.
