A human rights organisation monitoring the treatment of political prisoners in Colombia has released information regarding a series of abuses committed on 15 January 2014 by prison guards at the Tramacua prison in the Valledupar region of Colombia. They are now calling for the prison to be closed and the prison guards responsible to be sanctioned.

The latest incident initiated when Leonardo Yepes was spotted in a restricted area. The prison guards demanded that he be searched, an instruction with which he complied, but they then proceeded to beat him and after other inmates sought to come to his aide, the prison guards released tear gas and assaulted the inmates with their truncheons, also sticks and table legs.

At least seven prisoners recorded serious injuries. This is not the first time prison guards have been accused of abusing the inmates, the Tramacua prison is indeed referred to by some as the Guantanamo of Colombia.
