There are serious concerns for the safety of David Ravelo Crespo, the leader of CREDHOS, a human rights NGO based in the Colombian city of Barrancabermeja. Mr Crespo has been a long standing victim of paramilitary intimidation and threats. In 2006, threatening phone calls were made to the CREDHOS office, alerting them to a plot to kill Mr Crespo. In mid-2007, paramilitaries from the 'Black Eagles' paramilitary group sent a death threat to various NGO members in Barrancabermeja among them, various members of CREDHOS. At the beginning of this year, Mr Crespo received a call saying that paramilitaries were planning his assassination.
On February 11th, an international organisation personally informed Mr Crespo that they had highly confidential information that the paramilitary commander known as 'Gomelo', had ordered his death and that they were planning an assassination attempt.
In recent weeks Mr Crespo has been being followed by unidentified men who have also been seen waiting outside his office and home.
As a result of this situation there are extreme concerns for the safety of Mr Crespo. Please contact your Member of Parliament and ask that they urge the Colombian authorities to protect his life.
