On 9 May, in various villages of the Tolima Department in Central Colombia, eight community leaders were arrested by the Army and taken to a nearby military base. Whilst in military captivity their photograph was taken on numerous occasions and they were then transferred to a different municipality where they were sent before a judge the following day.

Amongst those captured is Guillermo Cano, peasant farmer leader of the ASTRACATOL organisation which is a member of FENSUAGRO. Just days before he had taken part in the UN organised debate on political participation in the Colombian capital, Bogota.

All eight detained are members of the Patriotic March and human rights organisations are calling for their immediate release.
