Army Executes Farmer in Cordoba

News from Colombia | on: Sunday, 19 May 2013

The Colombian National Movement of Victims (MOVICE) has reported the extrajudicial execution by the army of a peasant farmer, Manuel Enrique Martinez Cardona. Mr Martinez was assassinated by troops near the settlement of Osa, in the Tierralta municipality of Cordoba department, northern Colombia. Although few details are provided, it appears that Mr Martinez was shot on the morning of 5 May, he was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died at 4am on 6 May 2013.

The killing comes in the wake of a ‘Solidarity and humanitarian action’ meeting held in the town of Crucito on 26-27 of April, where local organisations sought to raise awareness of human rights.

MOVICE reports that the meeting was ‘stigmatised and attacked by the security forces and by civilian authorities in the region’. In its statement MOVICE also said ‘It seems abhorrent to us that the army continues to attack the civilian population during the peace talks, and that the government does not say anything.’

The execution of Mr Martinez comes in the wake of the killings of two other local land activists, Elver Cordero and Ermes Vidal. Mr Cordero was assassinated on April 9, and Mr Vidal on March 23.
