Local human rights organisations report that Gustavo Londono, FENSUAGRO activist and Head of Human Rights for the local agricultural workers’ union was assassinated on the afternoon of Monday 25th June in Caloto Municipality, Cauca Department. He was shot dead by men riding a motorbike, dressed in civilian clothing. Colleagues later found his body – he had been shot 8 times, 5 of those in the head. Mr Londono has sat on the FENSUAGRO National Committee and was at the time of his death also a member of the National Committee of the new social and political movement, the Patriotic March. The area he was killed in is completely controlled by soldiers of the 14th Mobile Brigade of the Colombian Army.
In recent weeks, there has been a surge of violence against trade unionists and other activists in the Patriotic March, after senior representatives of the Colombian State accused the movement of being linked to the FARC guerrillas.
