The FECODE teachers’ union has reported the kidnap attempt on the daughters of Over Dorado Cardona and Martha Rocio Alfonso Bernal, both of whom are teacher trade unionists. The attempt happened on Thursday 5th April in the town of Itagui in Colombia’s Antioquia province.
The two children, aged 8 and 10 years old, had been left with grandparents, with the parents agreeing to pick them up between 9-10pm. At 8.45pm a car arrived at the grandparents house, driven by a couple who said that they had been sent by Mr Dorado. The grandfather went inside to call his granddaughters, who were playing at an aunts house a few doors down the street. The aunt luckily had the presence of mind to phone the parents, who told her that they had sent no-one. In the meantime, the couple in the car had fled the scene. FECODE has reported receiving threats against its leadership in recent weeks.
Colombian trade unions and social organisations are calling for the government to investigate this kidnapping attempt, and are also calling for Mr Dorado and Mrs Martha Alfonso to be provided with protection measures.
