USW Write to Clinton - New Threats to Trade Unionists are No Coincidence

News from Colombia | on: Monday, 24 October 2011

In a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton the USW has expressed its concern at frech paramilitary death threats against Colombian trade unionists.

The letter cites new threats received by trade unionists in Colombia on October 17th from a paramilitary group called the 'Black Eagles'. According to the USW "it is not a coincidence that such a threat was made upon the Congress approving the Colombia FTA" and the letter urges the US government to call on the Colombian government to protect the lives of trade unionists, especially those named in the most recent threats.

A recent communique from the ADE teachers' union in Bogota states that at least 150 teachers in the city are living under death threats. Colombian trade unionists routinely receive death threats targetting them and their families. So far this year 23 trade unionists have been assassinated in Colombia.
