JFC hosted Colombian opposition Congressman Ivan Cepeda at Labour Party Conference with the support of several unions. He met with numerous trade union leaders, MPs and Labour Party figures, including Douglas Alexander MP, Shadow Foreign Secretary. Numerous MPs pledged their support for JFC and promised to up their involvement in the parliamentary group. One of the highlights of the week was Congressman Cepeda’s warmly received speech at the TULO reception, which preceded Ed Miliband’s speech in which he mentioned the need to support Colombian human rights campaigners.

JFC also held a successful fringe on Tuesday lunchtime attended by over 120 delegates. The event was chaired by Jim Sheridan MP and speakers included Tony Woodhouse (Chair of Unite EC), Ellie Reeves (Labour NEC), Billy Hayes (CWU General Secretary and JFC Chair), Tony Lloyd MP (Chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Colombia Group) and other trade unionists and politicians.

Assembled delegates heard of JFC’s work in opposing the FTA in Europe, campaigning to release political prisoners and increased parliamentary activity, before Congressman Cepeda explained the current situation in Colombia. He highlighted the ongoing assassination and imprisonment of activists in Colombia and called for the Colombian government to respect human rights. He also emphasised the importance of international support needed in order to achieve a peace process and end the conflict in Colombia.

While in the UK Congressman Cepeda also met with Foreign Office Minister Jeremy Browne to discuss the ongoing persecution of Colombian civil society and to explain the need for a peace process as a precondition to ending abuses in Colombia.
