Young Political Activist Shot Dead

At 9pm on August 16th Communist Party youth activist Rafael Andres Gonzalez Garnica was shot dead as he was leaving a restaurant in the town of Cartagena del Chaira en Caqueta department. His colleague Franklin Medina escaped the bullets but his whereabouts are currently unknown.
The youngsters worked in a photocopy shop. In recent days, the army had accused them of reproducing FARC propaganda. These types of accusations often lead to threats and assassination. The region is heavily militarised and the army is known to have committed several human rights abuses in the area, and military operations have caused numerous people to be forcibly displaced.
No one has been arrested for Mr Gonzalez’ murder.
